Did you know there is an artform to lightsaber combat? That’s right! When considering the heavy hilt and the blade that can cut in any direction, it provides a wide window of opportunity for getting crafty (and causing some serious damage) with a lightsaber on an opponent.
However, it is worth mentioning that there is a quite a history that comes with this powerful device. Some of the most prominent combat lightsaber styles (seven to be exact) have been developed by the Jedi Order. Although other organizations (cough cough, the Siths) created their own unique methods of utilizing lightsabers for combat, the Jedi way has stood the test of time and this legendary knowledge has been passed down for generations.
Lightsaber Combat Techniques
Depending on the era in which they were created, unique methods and focuses were applied to the various forms of lightsaber combat. Although lightsabers remained a staple in battle, the use of such a weapon had to evolve in order to keep up with the next generation in terms of the technology used for weaponry. For example: Jedi had to learn how to confront enemies wielding blasters (with a lightsaber) when lightsaber battles became few and far in between.
About Lightsaber Combat Styles
Since the creation of the lightsaber, the “classic” styles and forms were incredibly hard to master for several different reasons. One of the major issues was that all of the lightsaber’s weight was held in its hilt. However, it has been stated that only an individual who was a Force-sensitive could master the lightsaber completely in the event of combat. There has been lightsaber duelists who were not sensitive to the force such as General Grievous and Pre Vizsla, but they may have been exceptions to the rule.
Additionally, all seven of the lightsaber combat forms include basic techniques that can be found in ancient sword fighting, such as counters, parries, overhand strikes, and defensive postures. For example: a riposte is known as a technique whereas an individual struck their opponent after blocking or deflecting their attack.
So in consideration of the information above, why not find out if you’re a Force-sensitive who is about to master such a legendary weapon and bring down the Dark Side with a combat lightsaber. If you’re not a Force-sensitive, have no worry as there’s plenty of non-Force-sensitives who excelled in the combat lightsaber department.
